Anyone had any luck running an affiliate program from their niche retail product website?

My wife and I run a retail website where we sell our handcrafted products. I have recently been thinking about launching an affiliate program in order to (hopefully) increase our online sales.

I know that a lot of people make money by becoming Amazon affiliates, so I don't even know how interested people would be in becoming an affiliate for a much smaller website such as our own.

Has anyone here ever run a successful (or unsuccessful) affiliate program from their own smaller-than-Amazon website? How did you go about finding trustworthy affiliates? Was the experience worth it or did the risks outweigh the rewards?
