Resources for Patenting a product.

I have an idea for a product, but I have no idea how to go about patenting it. I can have a prototype built and ready to go in about 2-3 months. I just need a good starting point. What are the best websites for getting patent information? Do I need to talk to patent lawyer first, or should I try and do it on my own? Really need some help getting started.
