Shopify vs free eCommerce plataforms

I am starting a small online store , so far I have just sold a couple hundred Euros worth of items but I want to step it up to gain some credibility and make my e-commerce store. Why does everyone recommend shopify, which you need to pay monthly, versus a free platform like prestashop?
