I was reading an article the other day that said that groceries will often mark up produce by 75%. The example they gave was a unit of packaged strawberries sells for $4.00 but is purchased from the supplier for $1.00. They said that's a 75% mark up on fresh strawberries. My question is, isn't that a 300% mark up? $4.00 is 3 times higher than 1.00 right? The way I figure it is 100% of $1.00 is 1.00 so if you sell the strawberries at $4.00 you're adding 3 100% to the $1.00 supplier price and that gives you a mark up of 300%. Am I way off? Will people understand what I'm saying?
