I posted this question in the r/accounting sub since I am an an accountant. But I felt this may be a pertinent sub to ask as well. I have been plucked to join a startup, I would be handling all of the bookkeeping and accounting for the company. Right now it is just the owner who is running the show, but their product has a lot of potential. He was looking at hiring on someone who has relevant experience at a small company which I do, but not quite this small. I want to have a management position one day and possible the CFO of a company, I feel like joining a small company would fast track that, and heck there are so many possibilities out there. However, I do not really know how to approach this type of situation I do not see a salary or an hourly wage worth while when it will be taking a lot of risk to join this company. In the case that the company makes a killing, I would like to share in the success of the company and be rewarded for being there since the beginning and taking a lot of risk to do so. So, I have had many discussions with the owner of the company but have not really mentioned anything about those arrangements. I think having equity in the company is a deal-breaker for me, without it, there is not a whole lot of incentive to accept the position. With it there is. But I do not want to come out immediately demanding it. However, I would like to hear other peoples opinions about what they would demand and how much as well as how they would approach the situation. Possibly, I could make it known, that if I stay for a year to show my loyalty I will receive however much in the company?
