7 Tips to get started with Facebook ads

Hi everyone.. I thought I'd share a couple of tips regarding Facebook ads for those are new to it and feel a bit confused about the whole thing. Obviously it's something that one could write about forever but It's just a few tips to help out.

Getting good results with Facebook comes down to the right expectations and patience. It's not something that will make you rich tomorrow but with a good budget set aside and the patience to learn it, it's great for many businesses. It usually takes a bit of testing to find the right audience and figure out which ad they respond the best to.

1. Account. Did you make a business account? (business.facebook.com) Facebook often close down your account for suspecious behavior - even if everything you are doing should be ok. could be due to spending too fast, creating too many ads too soon/too fast or a million other things.

It seems to help if you run it through a business account and manage your page and ads from there. the process is pretty straight forward and will probably make it easier to manage your campaigns anyway.

An ad account is just the account that your ads are created under (which takes care of billing etc) and can all be accessed in your business account along with your fan-pages etc.

2. Fan-page. You need to create a fan-page (if you dont already have one) to be able to do newsfeed ads (and an instagram account if you want to place ads there too).

3. Pixel. You should set up a pixel to be able to do retargeting and lots of other awesome things. Open ads manager (http://ift.tt/1TeaVBl) click tools > pixels. You should choose the Facebook pixel instead of the "conversion tracking pixel (old)", it has everything in one and is much easier to set up. There should be a guide on how to set it up in there as well.

4. Timezone When you create your ad account you should set the timezone to somewhere that allows you to be online between 12-2AM (midnight) in that timezone, not your own (unless you want to schedule the start of your ads in the future instead of starting them yourself).

Solid research points to this as the best time to start your campaigns to get optimal results (my advice is to create the campaigns 1-2 days prior so you are sure that they will be approved).

For example, i'm in Europe so i'm using the Los Angeles-timezone which makes 12-2AM to 9-11AM. I'd recommend just checking them once a day! It gets very addictive to hit refresh all the time ;)

5. Power Editor Use Power Editor instead of Ads Manager. You get more options and it's easier to duplicate campaigns. Link: http://ift.tt/1L9lliX

6. The ads. Each ad configuration (mix of bid type and all the other settings) will give you different results, price and so on. I dont know which bid objective/goal you want to use but when you set the bid i'd recommend setting it to auto so you are sure to get traffic and then optimize according to the results/price you get.

In my experience it's always cheaper to PAY using cpm and optimize by the objective you chose (clicks to website, pay per engagement etc). That way you take on the risk instead of Facebook when you select "pay only per click/engagement etc".

If you are doing CPC (cost per click) you should create 3 of the SAME ad within each adset (yes, duplicates!) as they dont perform the same. This will take a while to explain (i dont mind but i'm trying to keep this short and sweet :)) but the short version is that each one will "stick" differently and after a day or two it should be pretty clear which one performs better in each adset and you can cut the rest.

7. Targeting. Its the most important part of facebook ads. This is were you should spend most of your time if you want good results. It seems to me like the biggest problem with targeting is not who your audience is but rather if you actually found them or not. Targeting on FB is a science and art itself but a good place to start is to research for websites your audience might visit (webshops, blogs etc) and see if they have any fan-pages on Facebook and try to target those.

These are the most important things for now. I hope it makes sense.. if not just ask and I'll try my best to help :)
