Amazon Product, how long for your first sale?

Did you hope/pray that people would buy your product just by listing it up? Did you start with ads when your listing had 0 reviews? I am not a fan of the fake "I received this product at a discount for my honest review" I want true organic growth. What are my options to speed things up?
