I notice social media is becoming more prominent, and jobs consisting of "social media manager" are popping up more.
I feel and think like this is a pretty good opportunity to make a niche and I think a big upside to this is that it can be completely mobile.

Thing is, how can I prove to businesses that I'm actually getting them leads (likes, follows views) and then keep them?

I probably have to extend studies in additional info. tech. e.g: web development, wordpress being my brick and mortar, seo and what else?
I think this is good enough for validation. I've actually done this in the past, a food truck company was giving me monthly checks just updating their facebook. I'm also wondering if I can present my business to upcoming athletes like I've done for a friend in the past.
I'm having evil thoughts-- I'm gullible to think that I can gather enough clients to just update their FBs and live a monthly location independent life, but I really want to get deep here. I'm hesitant to look into this because I think I lack experience (never really worked as a big time social media guy- besides what do they really do except from posting silly pictures?) and there really isn't much exposure with the profession yet imo.
Is this worth dropping a semester or two of college to focus in? What am I missing here, what do I lack, and what do I need? What do big businesses do with their social media guy?
Advice is appreciated...
