I run an ecommerce business that doesn't take much time (I ship once per month), so aside from an hour or two each day updating content and doing a bit of other work for the site, I'm left with hours spare every week.
We've all heard people say they'd love to run an online business but wouldn't know where to start, or struggle to think of a name or idea.
I've been thinking about building and selling ready-to-go starter sites. I know the internet is full of these and they're usually terrible, duplicated sites. Flippa's starter site category is full of them, for instance.
I'd create unique, good quality sites and all the groundwork would be done already. It'd be a case of transferring it to the new owner and they'd be good to go.
I wouldn't be promising a get rich quick scheme. I'd make it clear to clients that it would be on them to grow and develop it into a viable and profitable business, I'd simply remove the headache of thinking of an idea, getting a logo completed, working with a web designer/developer etc.
I'd aim to stay away from listing the starter sites on Flippa and other such places. I'd advertise offline as well as online, and offer a professional and one-to-one service.
The sites I build would be a mixture of ecommerce, drop shipping, affiliate marketing, and blog-style sites that generate revenue through AdSense. I know some are more viable than others, and some take more time than others, but it would give customers a choice. An AdSense business might not make somebody even $50 a month but it's a way for them to learn the ropes without the headaches of starting from scratch.
If I grew this service, I think there'd be a lot of room to incorporate additional service. I could team up with accountants, SaaS companies and marketing experts etc and either outsource work to them or take a % of commission.
Essentially, the client could have their own ready-to-go business within a day or two. The site would already be made and be listed on my site, so they could take a look and see what they'd be buying. I'd start with a mixture of around 10 or 12 different sites to test the water, and if it takes off, I would develop and list more.
I've not thought in detail about pricing or anything but they'd probably be in the range of $100-$1000, depending on certain criteria, and how long it takes me to build. I couldn't sell a site for $100 if it takes me three days to build, for instance.
I appreciate that it'll be a very competitive market but I'd aim to develop a reputation and stand out from a large chunk of the crowd. There'd be plenty of opportunity for repeat custom and word-of-mouth referrals too.
I would love to hear from anybody who does this, or has done this before. Or even general opinions on whether or not this seems like a viable business concept?
I know it's not a business that's going to make me a millionaire overnight but it would cost me little in the way of money to set up, and would be mainly my time.
