Success has a lot to do with your sense of being Find out how to train yourself to make money and stay in tune with your mind, body and soul
Programmers are good at programming. They are terrible at marketing. They are terrible at business in general. When we think of new product ideas, we don’t try to validate the idea in any way because the path of least resistance is to start building the product. It’s easy. It’s familiar. We’re used to doing this day in and day out, and it give us the illusion of doing productive work. In reality, running full tilt at a new product idea without doing any kind of market validation is like tossing the dice in a casino. The biggest problem is that the toss of the dice costs us months of our time.
My advice for anyone trying to accomplish something that is inherently difficult is to walk the path of highest resistance. What would have been the path of highest resistance for me? Customer development, getting on the phone, emailing potential customers and partners and gasp meeting them in person. Basically, I’m a prototypical nerd/geek who would rather stay inside and program rather than go out and find out if my product idea is worth anything to real people.
I think I was largely cognizant of my time wasting behavior throughout the years, but that’s just the power of the path of least resistance. My mind was always trying to look for something relatively easy to do that would trick my ego into thinking I was doing something productive. Of course, I tried talking to customers, but I always end up defaulting to my most comfortable state.
I wrote this so that I can put a stake in the ground and start coming out of this self-imposed bubble. Let me know about your thoughts and any advice you might have. Sales and Marketing is something I really need to improve on.
Feel free to email, comment or even call me. I’m free to talk about anything.
