My husband and I handcraft and sell hollow books for a living online, here is how my product photos have evolved...

Success has a lot to do with your sense of being Find out how to train yourself to make money and stay in tune with your mind, body and soul

Hello fellow entrepreneurs!

I'm Kara, co-owner, mom to a cat, crafter, marketer, copywriter, product-photo-taker of the hollow book business I run with my husband.

Take a look at my then vs now product photos here.

  • I stopped doing watermarks (Blogs and other sites like apartmenttherapy.com that do features usually state they won't accept photos that have watermarks, and we've changed our logo font a few times, so this is easier to keep photos consistent).

  • I got rid of some of the props (I wanted more focus on the book but kept some props for a home-like look, for our product, I didn't think the sterile white background was good).

  • Changed the perspective slightly so it's more on eye-level and not as much from above

We're a company of 2 people, and we don't want to hire any employees. Sales from our 2 sites pay our mortgage, utilities, groceries, Christmas gifts, a weekend sailing trip each year, and a little to put away for the future. With no kids, we have more time than money, so we're doing all the photos and marketing ourselves.

I'd be interested to hear how others with small budgets handle product photos/marketing. If you have any questions for me, AMA.
