Why Successful People Take 10 Years To ‘Succeed Overnight’

Success isn’t just about working over a long period of time. As Ramit says there’s a “deeper strategy used by successful people to level up that almost no one talks about…”

The Under Appreciated Power Of Sequence

Ramit makes a controversial point that “starting big” is a waste. It leads to doing to trying to do too much at once. Instead the proven strategy that the top entrepreneurs use is the “Domino Strategy”. Start small. Focus on what’s achievable.
“First, start so small that you can easily knock over the first domino.”
“Next, put the dominos in just the right sequence so that each small step makes the next bigger step possible.”
The key here is to focus on what step will make the next step easier. The first few steps can be simple. I’ve seen this in my own business failures. I was slaving away for months at coffee shops on my computer. But I wasn’t focused on the right sequence of events. Sequence, sequence, sequence!

”How The Domino Strategy Helped Elon Musk Become Elon Musk”

“The domino strategy shows how a tony amount of energy can be converted into something 1,000 times or even a billion times larger.” Look at this video. It’s incredible. The amount of force that’s needed at the beginning is deceptively small. The same thing is true with business. Start small. Get your first customer. Then your second. With time your wins will be larger and larger.
Elon Musk has been working hard for decades, not years. Just one small example is that he read two books a day in his teenage years! He kept leveling up and getting better from a young age. You can see the domino effect everywhere. Paul Graham (founder of Y Combinator) uses it. Verne Harnish (co-founder of Entrepreneurs’ Organization) uses it. David Sacks (Yammer) uses it.

”Why We Miss The Power Of Dominos”

Ramit talks here about “invisible scripts”. It’s a fancy term for “limiting beliefs” (to use Tony Robbin’s terminology). I think the best example he gives is around money. “I don’t want to have to track every penny of my spending for the rest of my life! (You don’t but that invisible script allows you to not track anything at all.” I see this All The Time with my friends. “All or nothing” Ramit says, is the biggest invisible script. Ever heard of lottery tickets?

”Escaping The Treadmill of Disappointment”

Because of these “overnight success” stories we expect immediate results. We push hard and we’re ready for the world to change because of our efforts. And then it doesn’t.

The critical thing to understand is that the dominos grow at an exponential rate. This point really resonates with me personally. In a new business adventure I often forget that the small wins up front count. I recently validated a business idea. Huge win. But man, when I was in the weeds I often felt “can sending this next email really be valuable?”
The big lesson is understand the sequence that’s needed and stick with it. Do a lot of work.

Conclusion

Here’s the critical question from Gary Keller: “What’s the One Thing that I can do such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
