ELI5: What is a Delaware LLC and what are the true advantages?

I was gonna post this over at ELI5 but I think this sub is more appropriate.

Anyway, so I understand there's a lot of advantages with registering your company in Delaware but why?

I'm in NYC, if I register my LLC in Delaware and I'm doing business in NYC, don't I still need to abide by NY laws? i.e the publication requirements

So, why do people choose to register their company in Delaware even though they're doing business elsewhere?
