I’m a project engineer and I own an LLC in Denver, Co that provides engineering services. My previous role is best described as a jack-of-all-trades: I was assigned a project and had to get it done, this often meant learning new skills. I want to build a publishable portfolio, so I’m offering my services for free.
What I’m offering: Free help for your physical product/project. I’m not an app developer. I want to help turn your idea/design into something tangible and provide you with solutions to you engineering or design questions.
Some stuff I can probably help with:
- Prototype design
- Automate a repetitive process
- Research an idea
- Find a component and a vendor
- Design a component
- Basic CNC/CAM
- Solve a problem (intentionally vague)
- Help tweak your design so it can be accurately quoted and affordably produced
- Troubleshooting
Who I am: A project engineer/manager that has 5 years of experience designing, developing, and delivering products. I have an LLC in Denver, Colorado and plenty of extra time to help people out.
My main work has been with automated equipment for pharmaceutical manufacturing; I’ve done estimating, R&D, project management, design, installation, validation, quality control, documentation, process development, and the list goes on. I worked for a small company and at times was their only engineer on staff; as you might imagine, I’ve had my hand in a lot of things. I can program a number of things, particularly industrial PLCs and Arduino. I’m also OK with a few programming languages (VB.net, Python, VBA) that facilitate the interaction with and data transfer from automated equipment. This may seem esoteric, but I find this experience exceedingly helpful when doing small projects on my own. Maybe it will be of help to you.
How it will work: You send me a PM and I will give you my contact information (email, phone number, and skype). We discuss the thing you need help with and I start working on it. If you happen to be within 2 hours of Denver, we can meet up.
I will provide you with an informal report of my findings with all relevant information. This will include any 2D/3D CAD designs in DXF or STL format. Any source code written will be included.
Unless you are local, I don’t really want any of your physical property or buy supplies for prototyping. I want to create a situation where if I am unable to help you, it doesn’t cost us anything but some time.
What I get out of it: Not much. I have too much free time and not enough ideas. I enjoy having things to work on and I’m willing to work for free on a limited basis (let’s say 20 hours) as long as I can showcase whatever we work on as part of my portfolio online. By showcase I mean, post pictures of the overall product and/or what I worked on, a brief description of the product and what I did for you, along with a link to your website.
This is hopefully a chance for you to get some help on your projects and a chance for me to build up a body of work that I can show off.
The agreement: I’m not a lawyer. I’ll try to explain what I have in mind… I’m willing to sign an NDA as long as it is understood that I retain rights to the things I work on. Example: you are building something and I write some code for it. Down the line someone brings me something else and I could reuse the code; I want the ability to reuse my original work. If you want to purchase exclusive rights, that can be discussed.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please post them!
