How do I seed a social platform?

I am starting a business service which is basically like a social network. I know that if I joined a social network I wouldn't stay if I saw no one else on the platform. Does anyone have advise on how to get this started?

A few ideas I had: 1) Initially have a bunch of fake users and then remove them as I build real uses 2) Have a beta to draw in the initial user base 3) Advertise (but I worry about losing potential uses for the reason above)
