A Brief Study of Influence The most important personality trait of an entrepreneur
I study people with influence.
At a house party, they change rooms and in a couple minutes, everyone else is in that room. At a wedding, everyone around the table is leaning in to hear the story they’re telling.
People with influence change the social temperament of a room. At times, for better; at times, for worse. They have a gravitational pull, magnetically drawing the eyes and ears of the room.
Influence is an innate characteristic. A nose is to appearance as influence is to character. In other words, it’s not how you look or how you sound. It’s part of who you are.
Influence is natural, unforced, and unscripted. It doesn’t increase with more concentration or practice. It’s subliminal. Leaders can get people to do something, but it doesn’t mean they are influential.
Additionally, influence does not always connote positivity. When a person with influence enters the room with negative energy, people are attracted to this person, even when they feel worse for it. Yet if a person of influence brings a funny story and “their laugh” to a group, the amplitude of the conversation bursts with color and connection.
4 Causes of Influence
Mystery Ever pick up a book you can’t put down or a TV show you can’t stop watching? These medias have been thoughtfully architected to keep readers and viewers intrigued. It seems to be a human pattern — we must know how the story ends or what happens to our favorite character.
In the same way, meeting a person with influence is an insatiable encounter. We must know who this person is and we will continue to give our attention until we are satisfied.
Independence If there were a dozen other statues on Ellis Island, all the same size as Lady Liberty, she would lose her glory.
People with influence stand out. They are confident in themselves with high levels of self-awareness — not self-consciousness. Because of this, they put themselves out there, seeking to empower and help others.
Uniqueness If uniqueness were a driver, then passion would be its vehicle. The bigger the vehicle the more passengers it can take. In other words, your passion is what makes you interesting. The bigger your passion the more interesting you become. People like interesting things.
The most un-influential phrase someone can say is, “I’m bored.”
Purpose Purpose is like bacon. Add it to anything and it makes it better.
People with purpose are unstoppable. They see how the world could be better and believe it is their responsibility to make it happen.
When people see a person with deep belief in a mission, they follow.
As an entrepreneur, you must be a person of influence to succeed. Do some hard thinking. Do these traits describe you?
